Re: LED lighting: does it work for chickens
Received a eNews this morning about a FREE Webinar: LED Lighting for Indoor Farmers. It's really geared to horticultural lighting. However, if you are truly interested in LED lighting with regard to poultry, you could take what you like and leave the rest (make some assumptions). On the registration...

Re: Frustrated with frostbite
I buy meat thermometres in the kitchen department from Canadian Tire to use as soil temp testers. Much cheaper than the Lee Valley Tools versions. And accurate enough for our needs.

Glycerine is your friend! Vaseline is petrolium jelly (an oil derived product). Glycerine is derived from animals mainly, but is sometimes of vegetable origin. Food-grade glycerine is edible, so won't hurt your hens. You can find food-grade glycerin in cake supply and craft stores (such as Michael's...

Re: LED lighting: does it work for chickens
Great strides are being made with regard to LED lighting and horticulture. I can only assume that research is being done on LED lighting in poultry barns? Check out all the pretty pink (red and blue spectrum actually) LED lights at Colorado State University. https://source.colostate.edu/philips-part...

Re: performance Poultry
6 White Leghorn Pullets (pick-up end of May). They started laying mid-December; XSM at first (to be expected). Up to Med size now, which is good in my opinion, considering it is January after all. I fully expect them to all be laying Lg eggs by March.

Re: performance Poultry
We ordered eight breeds from Performance last Spring. Lost one chick out of sixty around the first week. Of all the breeds we ordered we were most impressed with the #1 Dark Brahmas, #2 Delawares and #3 Leghorns. Almost all are laying now. I'm tracking the eggs to gage production of each breed. So f...

Re: What to do
Also what do people do with the carcass/body? We have a chicken grave yard (no markers mind you). If the ground is frozen, they go in a tightly sealed bag, and into a separate section in the deep-freeze until Spring thaw. If you plan to bury them, take care to locate your final resting place(s) awa...

Arbor, you and PAJoel (my brother) are kindred spirits. I keep chickens for food security. Can't beat free range eggs. And, if Armageddon ever does descend on us, I know how to process a bird rather than starve. I just like to know how much my healthy free range eggs cost me. Hmmmm... maybe that's t...

Re: Leg bands
I have heard stories of similar problems with leg bands cutting/growing into the flesh of the leg. Hence, I always use a size that sort of flops around the birds leg - one size larger. And we never tag until the birds are six- to seven-months old. Never considered the bands could defy gravity. Maybe...
