Re: Selling meat birds from the house?

Boy am I glad I posted this! Thanks everyone. I've submitted online to the Food Program to be registered as a grower. I may have a better chance of breaking even once I redesign our fencing and figure out a way to keep the dairy goats and chickens out of each others feed. Our goat paddock is about a...

Re: Selling meat birds from the house?

We took up raising our on birds to ensure we are getting quality food and definitely not as a cash savings measure. I have not estimated the added value of tick reduction on our property nor the addition of nitrogen to my wife's garden from coop litter. We are fine with that decision then and now. B...

Re: Selling meat birds from the house?

Thats what I've thought too and what I've been telling anyone who asks for meat birds Farrier but I'd like to know that for certain if I can find the source. I did find the legislation on gate sales of farm eggs prior to selling our eggs. If there was a way to sell above board we'd consider doing so...

Selling meat birds from the house?

We've been selling our excess eggs from the homestead since our first flock started producing them last fall. We've incubated several batches of new birds this year and have done fairly well for our egg and meat needs at home. Our repeat egg customers have often asked about buying meat birds from us...

Re: Fatty Liver Disease? (graphic post mortem images warning)

As I promised here is the Guelph Path Lab report on that fat chicken necropsy months ago. I just received the bill for it last week from our vet. Seeing as I paid for it I asked for a copy as some folks here were interested. Its a PDF so I hope it uploads. Second page came to me upside down in the p...

Question about incubating eggs for other people

My wife was approached at work by someone who has a few Guinea Fowl and can't seem to breed more. If our Brinsea works for us and our Wyandottes I have no problem helping someone else get chicks but what do people usually ask in the way of compensation that is fair? When I started out in Wyandottes ...

Time to watch how the pros do it

Thanks to Harvey Ussery's book I believe I've identified a broody hen in our flock. I quickly slapped together a brooding box for her, gave her exclusive domain over a portion of the coop with fresh pine shavings and will leave her undisturbed with her own feed and water. I waited until dark, pet he...

Re: new coop for the girls

Maybe it was my time in Boy Scouts as a kid but preparation is a habit thats definitely been drilled into my brain after a career in disaster management. "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail" I heard many times over the years. Also I'm a reader and I like to research what I want to do if I don't...

Re: Fatty Liver Disease? (graphic post mortem images warning)

Tell us about your goats. An acre of bush was chainsawed out, I dug out a foundation for a 130 sq ft shed and planted posts to fence that acre with 48 inch woven wire goat fence including a scare wire at the top to make 5 feet of height. The shed went up yesterday and I have to tension the fence th...

Re: Fatty Liver Disease? (graphic post mortem images warning)

Adding my version of "quonsets" doubles the floor space for winter and they get to go sort of outside ;) with fresh air and dry feet. Hey OC I like that covered run idea better than mine last year. It was all chicken wire top to bottom but I failed to include a way to get in there and shovel. Your ...
