Re: Jersey Giant

Kelli Carder near Cookstown had some excellent JG's a few years back. I don't know if she's still breeding them but it might be worthwhile contacting her.

Edit to include that Kelli also breeds very nice chocolate Muscovey's :)

Re: Livestock Guardian Dogs - our experiences

We have 3 LGD's- male Great Pyrenees, female Maremma, and a daughter from the 2 of them. All 3 are a bit different personalities. The big male is very aggressive on coyotes, wanders a bit, much faster than he looks and can be intimidating to some people. But he is great with our young kids and anima...

Hunt them during the scheduled season. Pest control is different, and a year round option. They are fairly easy to live trap and relocate if you prefer.

Re: Long post, found the identity of the latest killer today

My understanding is that Jan's pup has matured into a very effective predator control enforcer :)
Just talked to a lady who got one of our pups last year for her farm in northern Ontario. Seems her lgd chased off a bear by itself a few weeks ago!

Absolutely heart breaking. So many lost in a single accident. My first thought when I saw it come up on the news was, with that many fatalities there will be some horrific injuries to the survivors. The only silver lining is the lives that have been saved by the one young lad who donated his organs.

Re: best laying breed

Most of the good layer breeds have been mentioned, except Magpies. Beautiful little ducks, but for some reason they just don't get much consideration.

Thanks everybody :)
Had a great day with my family and then a nice dinner at our favourite German restaurant, plus the biggest mug of Hacker-Pschorr I've ever drank :)
