I think you will be alright, trying to add pullets usually ends up in a battle.

Winter and quail? You'd be surprised how well they handle winter (mind you last winter wasn't very cold). I had them in a cage in a cold shed (with a straw floor).

Thanks, @Happy . The others are only now really getting back to being quails again. The first few days they stayed inside their house and only ventured out briefly at dusk to eat and drink in the run. This morning they came right out when I opened the pop door and were eagerly pecking away at the feed and the sprouted buckwheat I brought out for them. I think they had been mourning the loss of their friend, but are now ready to move forward. I'm still feeling bad about it, though.

Any animal that cries in pain or fear would affect the rest for a day or two. Same happened here with the fox attack.

For reference here's a few older threads on quail.

I was hoping to attach some pics of our quail pen and house, but I get a message that the board attachment quota has been reached. Hmmm. Sorry - will try to resize them to see if that makes a difference.

The run has a main wall that opens up for full access, and hubby will be putting in a smaller door within a door for quick feed and water refills, etc.
They seem to like it. I also put in a dust bath, but they seem happier to do that in the deep litter, so I think I will remove it for the time being.
It's raining pretty hard out there now, so I'm off to batten down the hatches in the chicken coop and in the quail pen.

I tried to upload some pics earlier, but I ran into size errors. Now that I've managed to compress a few the roundabout way, it works ...
