plucking a duck
Hi, one of my female ducks had to be killed today. I want to pluck her rather than skin. I remember from the previous forum that some said it was easier to dry pluck a duck. If so, am I supposed to wait or pluck immediately?

Wait couple of hours, until the flesh has cooled down and skin feels firm, that way you will not rip the skin when plucking.

I am now wearing more feathers than the duck. I still have those fine hairs. Can I singe those? Will it leave a burnt smell on the skin?

Yes you can singe them it will not burn the skin,if done carefully, may leave a bit of a smoky track, but that will wash off.

ah yes.... no wonder my kids scratch their heads at us.
There I was sitting on a stool with a pillowcase to stuff feathers into and a plastic sheet on the floor. The neck was hanging down and dripping a bit onto the sheet, feathers were everywhere (fleece sweatshirts are not the clothing of choice when dry plucking BTW)..... and then the neighbour comes to the door!

how does waxing a bird work? Is it like on the karate kid? wax on, wax off LOL? or fill a pot with wax... where do you get the wax from? paraffin wax? melt it then dunk bird... then wipe wax off once cool... then what? wipe wax off into another pot? is the wax a one time use? I dont know man im cheap LOL. what do you do with spent wax? a few of us were talking about this the other day but none of us had actually done it lol.
P.S.... I have meat ducks now! Pekins!

Al, it's exactly the same as when you have your legs waxed, accept the lucky duck is already dead.
Sorry, I couldn't resist,
Too expensive and fussy as far as I am concerned, just have to time the deed, before the pin feathers come in, hard to do when they meet unplanned end.
